If you’ve read my book on Adventure, then you’ll know how I feel about puzzles with no solutions, or puzzles which can be solved in more than one way. They seem pointless and are often frustrating to solve (although they can be interesting as brain-teasers), so I always try to avoid them when writing games. King of Kings has none of these faults. It’s exactly what its name implies .

The starting situation is that the player controls a tiny white square which lives in one corner of a square black screen (only 8 pixels by 8 pixels). This is the Kingdom. In fact, it’s more like a prison for this lone figure – from its minuscule vantage point it can only see 4 of its 16 walls. Four borders have been breached, and great armies are pour ing through each gap to destroy everything on the inside. As if this wasn’t bad enough, four other breaches have been made into adjacent kingdoms; again vast hordes stream across these new frontiers to pillage your kingdom and slay you. So there you are with an anti-social little guy, stuck in a tiny square world, and all these dorks are invading. How do you keep the hordes from overrunning your domain?

If you’re thinking of writing “bigger guns”, forget it because there isn’t any death here – just more life…more soldiers who will come on, wave after wave of them until nothing is left except a black screen (and that’s if you last long enough). The King can grow his army by getting rid of his dead enemies, but this causes him problems too. When he eats an enemy soldier he grows one soldier in size; but when he does so another hole appears in the Kingdom wall. But not only does each meal cause holes, it also allows more soldiers to enter the kingdom
